How to anchor a portable capstan winch properly

EVIK portable capstan winches do not require permanent anchoring. Simply strap them to a solid anchor point using the hook straps; under tension, the system stabilizes during operation.

Common anchoring setups

  1. Tree — Horizontal pull
Use the tree mounting base (BIA-1263) with the winch mounting plate (BAI-1268).
Benefit: mount at any height on the trunk and keep free rotation to aim the pull.
  2. Tree — Vertical pull
Combine BIA-1263 with winch mounting plate (BIA-2264).
Benefit: helps prevent unwanted winch lifting and increases safety during pulling.
  3. Vehicle — Tow hitch (EU type)
Use tow-hitch base (BIA-1266) + BAI-1268 for horizontal pull with free rotation; for vertical pull, use BIA-1266BIA-2264 to prevent lifting.

Quick setup steps

  1. Select the anchoring kit (tree or hitch) with the correct base/plate.
  2. Route and tighten the straps through the winch hooks to a solid anchor.
  3. Align the pull direction (take advantage of the rotation capability where applicable).
  4. Pre-tension the line to stabilize everything before full pulling load.

Safety checklist (before pulling)

  • Inspect straps/hooks for wear.
  • Confirm the correct base/plate for the setup (BIA-1263, BAI-1268, BIA-2264, BIA-1266).
  • Keep people out of the line of pull and potential recoil path.
  • Maintain a straight pull angle where possible.
  • Use PPE (gloves, safety glasses, safety footwear).

Note: Choose horizontal or vertical setup based on the job; BIA-2264 solutions are engineered to prevent winch lifting in vertical pulls.
